Shaolin Stick Workshop
The Stick has ancient origins, dating back to when early humans used branches for self-defense against predators. Simple in design, it was a straight wooden pole crafted from durable woods, such as the white wax rod, which, despite its soft texture, was resistant to breaking. Typically measuring around 12 feet, its thickness varied according to personal preference. Initially a practical tool in primitive societies, the stick evolved into one of the earliest weapons of war. During the Ming Dynasty, iron rods were effectively used by monks to defend against invaders. With the advent of firearms, the stick shifted from military use to becoming a staple in martial arts practice.
The Shaolin Stick is a unique and traditional Chinese Martial Arts form. This form has its origins in the Shaolin Temple and has been practiced by monks at this temple for thousands of years.
The form is based on the 32 basic stick techniques combined in to a smooth and flowing form. While there are some kick and jump movements, this form is easily modified to suit seniors and is a great introduction to the use of Tai Chi weapons.
The Shaolin Stick is easy to learn and to practise, regardless of age or fitness level. All you need is a spacious and open area. This form is relaxing and enjoyable, rather than strenuous, and a lot of fun. It offers multiple benefits including fitness, self-defence, and even as a practical walking aid.
It helps strengthen the body, reduce stress, and improve mobility of shoulders and wrists. For Tai Chi practitioners, it is particularly effective in nourishing vital energy, balancing internal organs, and relaxing muscles and bones.
By harmonising the body, breath, and mind, practitioners can achieve better health, fostering "positive energy within, where no negativity can intrude."
